Welcome Message

Welcome to Singapore and the 15th International Conference on Sustainable Energy Technologies (SET 2016). SET2016 will take place in Singapore from 19th to 22nd July 2016, hosted by the National University of Singapore (NUS), in collaboration with the World Society of Sustainable Energy Technologies (WSSET), American Institute of Chemical Engineers Singapore Local Section (AIChE SLS), and E2S2-Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise programme (E2S2-CREATE).

Singapore is the perfect meeting location for SET 2016, as Singapore is a highly-urbanized city with limited energy resources and hence “energy sustainability” is highly required for Singapore. For instance, Singapore is investing in research and development as well as test-bedding to develop and also improve the performance of waste-to-energy system, which can reduce the volume of solid waste by about 90% and produces steam that runs turbine-generators to generate electricity. Furthermore, Singapore is adopting an integrated approach towards in the sustainable energy management across power generation, transmission and consumption.

SET 2016 is a multi-disciplinary, peer-reviewed international conference on sustainable energy sources and technologies. This scientific meeting aims to provide a platform to gather scientists, industrialists and politicians around the world for the exchange of latest technical information, the dissemination of high-quality research results, the presentation of recent advances and new developments in the area of sustainable energy, and the debate and shaping of future directions and priorities for better environment, sustainable development and energy security.

SET 2016 has received 211 high-quality submissions from over 30 countries or regions. All papers are peer reviewed before being accepted for presentation at the conference and published in the conference proceedings. Full manuscripts of selected papers will be published in special issues of the following prestigious international journals: Applied Energy, Energy, Low-Carbon Technologies, International Journal of Refrigeration, and Renewable Bioresource.

SET 2016 is honored to have eight distinguished keynote speakers from all over the world, Professor Christine A. Shoemaker from the Cornell University (United States), Professor Ibrahim Dincer from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (Canada), Professor Jinyue Yan from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology& Malardalen University (Sweden), Professor Markus Kraft from the Cambridge University (England), Professor Ruzhu Wang from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China), Professor Simon Ng from the Wayne State University (United States), Professor Steffen Lehmann from the University of Portsmouth (England) and Professor Jim Yang Lee from the National University of Singapore (Singapore), to share their research experience and vision on Sustainable Energy Technologies. SET2016 is also honored to have nine outstanding invited speakers, Professor AbuBakr Bahaj from the University of Southampton (England), Professor Atsushi Tsutsumi from the University of Tokyo (Japan), Professor Charles Q. Jia from the University of Toronto (Canada), Professor Hongxing Yang from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Hong Kong), Mr. Joe Eades who is the Founder and Managing Director of Ispahan Group and engineering consultancy headquartered in Singapore, Professor Kim Choon Ng from the King Abdullah University of Science & technology (Saudi Arabia), Professor Shizhong Li from the Tsinghua University (China), Professor Yanjun Dai from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China) and Professor Yong Sik Ok from the Kangwon National University (Korea).

Moreover, SET 2016 will also hold a workshop on biochar and gasification technologies. This workshop plays two important roles. First, it formalizes the development of a Singapore-based biochar interest group and network that involves a wide range of stakeholders; yet, this network has an international relevance and reach, this serves as a connection platform for local stakeholders with regional and international networks, including the International Biochar Initiative. Second, it aims to highlight the kind of challenges faced in developing the knowledge base and applying biochar to the various industry contexts in Singapore. We are honored to have Mr. Trevor Richards who has associated with the development of the nascent biochar industries in South East Asia and NZ and established the SEA Biochar interest Group since 2009, and Professor Harn Wei Kua from the National University of Singapore (Singapore), as session chairs.

The excellent program and activities of SET 2016 are the results of diligent effort from more than 30 program committee members and conference organizers. We greatly thank all program committee members, for their careful reviews to make an outstanding technical program. Our thanks also go to the international advisory board members for their helpful advice and support. Last but not least, great thanks should also go to the authors and participants for their tremendous supports in making the SET 2016 conference a success.

We hope you will enjoy your stay in Singapore and find SET 2016 conference interesting and useful.

With Best Wishes
